Guide for cruise passengers

How to Get from Salerno Cruise Port to the Amalfi Coast by Boat

Your ship docks in Salerno for the day and the Amalfi Coast starts right outside the harbour. The quickest and most scenic way to see it is from the sea. Here are your options, and how to be back on board in time.

Why go by sea

The coastal road from Salerno to Amalfi is narrow and winding, and in high season buses and taxis get stuck in traffic. From the water there are no queues, and you see the villages the way they were built to be seen: Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Atrani and Amalfi, stacked on the cliffs above the sea.

Option 1: the public ferry

Scheduled ferries leave from Salerno harbour for Amalfi and Positano. The trip takes about 35–45 minutes to Amalfi and about 70 minutes to Positano. Things to know before you rely on it:

  • Most routes run from spring to early November, with fewer boats or none in winter.
  • Departures are at fixed times, boarding is first come, first served, and summer queues can be long.
  • Sailings can be cancelled at short notice in rough sea.
  • The ferry will not wait for you. If the last boat back is full or cancelled, you still have to reach your ship.

Option 2: a private boat tour from Salerno

A private tour starts a few minutes' walk from the cruise terminal, with only your group on board and a local skipper at the helm. You choose the length by your time in port, and we plan the route backwards from your all-aboard time.

  • 2 hours: Vietri sul Mare, the Due Fratelli rocks and Cetara, with one swim stop. For ships in port 5 hours or more.
  • 3 hours: on past Erchie to Maiori and Minori, with two swim stops. For ships in port 6 hours or more.
  • 4 hours: every village up to Atrani and Amalfi, with a swim stop or a short walk in Amalfi.
  • 7 hours: the whole coast to Positano, with the Emerald Grotto, the Furore fjord and free time ashore.

Back to ship on time: you are back at the pier at least 1 hour before all-aboard, and the cruise terminal is a short walk away. Our boats are a classic Gozzo Di Luccia 28, the Extreme Marine 8.5 with a toilet on board, and the Marinello Eden 18 for small groups.

Where we meet

Salerno Maritime Station, the wave-shaped terminal designed by Zaha Hadid, sits on Molo Manfredi. Walk out of the terminal towards the marina: your skipper waits at the pier with a Boat Tours Amalfi Coast sign. After booking we send you the exact pier and a live location pin on WhatsApp.

Tips for cruise passengers

  • Plan around your all-aboard time, not the ship's departure time.
  • Book before your cruise: in high season the best time slots go first.
  • Bring swimwear, sunscreen, a light layer, your cruise card and ID.
  • Keep your phone with WhatsApp on, so we can reach you.
