Why autumn is the season
In October and November the summer crowds are gone, the water is still mild and the sea is often flat in the early morning. In our experience it is the best time of the year for squid, cuttlefish and octopus close to the coast, so most of our trips this season are fishing trips.
Why we leave at dawn
Squid and cuttlefish feed most actively in low light, at dawn and dusk. Leaving at 6:30 means we are on the fishing spots when they bite, on a calm sea, while the sun rises over the Gulf of Salerno and the coast is still empty.
What is eging
Eging is a fishing technique from Japan for squid and cuttlefish. You cast a small artificial lure shaped like a shrimp, called an egi, let it sink and then move it with short jerks of the rod and long pauses. When a squid grabs it, you feel the weight on the line. It takes a few minutes to learn, and the skipper shows you how from the first cast. Octopus live near the rocky bottom and we target them with lures worked close to the seabed. When the conditions are right, we also try some trolling along the coast.
